Willie McLaughlin and Jangra Mandeep at the weigh-inIreland's Willie McLaughlin notched his second win of the season in the World Series of Boxing in Milan tonight to help Milano Thunder to a shut out 5-0 victory over Patrick Gallagher's Mumbai Fighters.

McLaughlin earned an impressive (48-26,49-45,48-46) unanimous decision over India's Jangra Mandeep in the WSB middleweight class.

Mandeep, whose tendency to engage in  theatrics throughout the bout failed to break McLaughlin's concentration on his task, was handed a public warning for holding in the third.

Willie McLaughlin
Tonight's win for McLaughlin - who boxes out of the Illies GG BC in Donegal - help consolidate Thunder's positions at the top of the Group A table, eight points clear of Dynamo Moscow.

Jason Quigley's and Sean Turner's Los Angeles Matadors will be in action away to the Astan Arlans of Kazakhstan tomorrow.

LA are lying in 4th spot in Group A, nine points behind Thunder.

The top four teams in the two groups qualify for the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Ken Egan's and Con Sheehan's Leipzig Leopards were beaten 5-0 away to Mexico City in Group B today.

McLaughlin is the only Irish boxer involved in the WSB this weekend.

The 2012 AIBA qualifying event will take place at the Hayri Gur Sports Hall in the city between April 13 and 22.

Host nation Turkey has yet to qualify any boxers for the London Olympics, but with home advantage, Eyup Gözgeç, the President of the Turkish Boxing Federation, is confident

"Unfortunately, none of our boxers qualified for the Olympics following the AIBA World Boxing Championships held in Baku last year,  but this qualifying event in Trabzon gives us a good opportunity to find our way back. Be ready to witness the best of our boxers", he said.

Ireland's Darren O'Neill, John Joe Nevin and Michael Conlan qualified for the London Olympics
at the Baku World Championships.

Ireland will be aiming for seven Olympic berths in Trabzon, while Katie Taylor and the Irish women's team will be targeting  three Olympic places at the AIBA Women's World Championships in China in May.

The 2012 Irish Daily Star Sponsored National Elite Senior Championships is locked and loaded and ready to rumble at Dublin's National Stadium.

Over 110 boxers have registered to compete at the tournament which gloves off at 7pm tomorrow evening (January 20th).

Friday's weigh-in will take place between 8.30am and 10am and 12 noon and 1pm at the National Stadium, followed by the draw at 1.30pm.

Darren O'Neill
An extra dimension has been added to the 2012 edition with the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers penciled in for Trabzon, Turkey between April 13th and 22nd.

With Michael Conlan, John Joe Nevin and Darren O'Neill - who will all be defending their respective titles at the 2012 Championships - having already booked their tickets for the London Olympics in the flyweight, bantamweight and middleweight classes, Ireland will be targeting seven Olympic berths in Trabzon.

Ireland's female boxers, including Katie Taylor, are aware that their only Olympic qualifier will be the AIBA Word Women's Championships in Qinhuangdao, China in May.

Three Olympic places are available for women in the flyweight, lightweight and middleweight classes.

However, the north-eastern Turkish city of Trabzon and the Chinese province of Qinhuangdao will be put on the back burner for the next three weekends as Olympic, World, European and European Union medalists battle for supremacy at the home of Irish boxing.

Jason Quigey (right) has moved down to welterweight
Looking ahead to the blue ribband tournament of Irish amateur boxing, head coach Billy Walsh, a seven-time Elite champion and Olympian, predicted a keenly contested competition.

"The National Championships this year have the makings of the best Championships ever because there is so much at stake for so many boxers. The amount of talent we have in some weight divisions is phenomenal, he said.

"To pick out just one weight, welterweight, we have Roy Sheahan, John Joe Joyce, Willie McLaughlin, all world class boxers. We have Jason Quigley dropping down to it and Michael O'Reilly - and then there's Adam Nolan the current champion.

"What a bunch of talent in that division. Then you have the whole Kenny Egan and Joe Ward scenario at light-heavyweight. These Championships will be phenomenal, even for the guys that have qualified for the Olympics, Michael Conan, John Joe Nevin and Darren O'Neill.

"I'm always making the point to the lads that to be National Senior champion - or Elite as its know nowadays - really is something special. I was lucky enough to win seven of them and every one of them is still very, very special to me.

"We are, of course, going to get a bit of juggling with the weights. The opportunity to qualify for the Olympics only comes around once every four years so guys are going to do whatever they can to make it."

John Joe Nevin
Ten-time Elite champion Ken Egan, who will be competing in his 12th consecutive Elite Championships, is eager to get between the ropes at IABA headquarters.

"It's hard to believe - twelve years gone in the blink of an eye. I had a good test last November just to see if the fire is still burning. It definitely is. It goes without saying that this year is a massive year for Irish
boxing and it will all begin at the National Stadium this weekend.

"I'm looking forward to it."

Adam Nolan (red) v Craig McCarthy

Stephen O'Reilly, Willie McLaughlin and Roy Sheahan all recorded inside the distance wins on opening night of the Irish Daily Star sponsored Elite Senior Championships at the National Stadium
this evening.

O'Reilly halted Andrew Jennings in round one, and McLaughlin and Sheehan took the early route to victory versus Gerard Griffin and Mark Fitzpatrick.

Mark O'Hara beat Paul Hyland in the opening bout of the 2012 Championships, O'Hara winning the all-Antrim clash 13-6.

Jason Conroy, Philip  Sutcliffe and European Youth silver-medalist Michael O'Reilly also had their hands raised in victory.

Michael O'Reilly (red) v Emmet Brennan
Jason Quigley, who has dropped down to welterweight, progressed at the expense of Patrick Gallagher. He'll now face McLaughlin in an all- Donegal clash on Saturday.

Additionally, Quigley and McLaughlin have both recorded two wins each for the Los Angeles Matadors and Milano Thunder in the World Series of Boxing this season.

Meanwhile, Adam Nolan, the defending welterweight champion, posted an impressive victory over Craig McCarthy and believes that things are going to get tougher in the high-quality 69Kg class.

"It's nice to get  the cobwebs out. I fought Craig last year in the quarter-finals and it was a tough fight. I knew coming in I would have to be on top of my form to win, said Nolan, who had Pete Taylor and his brother Darren working his corner tonight.

Beijing Olympian John Joe Joyce, Jamie Dowling, Noel Sommers and Conrad Cummings - with the Holy Trinity BC's second win of the evening - also progressed.

Conor Coyle denied the Crumlin BC their third win on-the-trot following a 12-9 win over John Corcoran.

Shane Egan claimed the final victory of the evening, a 15-13 verdict over Sean Shevlin doing the business for the Dublin middleweight.

Boxing recommences with two session tomorrow, beginning at 1pm and 7pm.
