Patrick Gallagher and Russell Lamour (WSB)

London 2012 Olympian John Joe Nevin will make his first appearance of the season for defending champions Paris United versus the Leipzig Leopards in Germany on Friday night.

The two-time AIBA World medalist meets Rashid Kaseem of Denmark at the World Series of Boxing lightweight limit (57Kg to 61Kg).

Kaseem was controversially adjudged to have beaten Nevin's Irish team-mate David Oliver Joyce when the Leopards toppled Istanbul Bosphorus almost two weeks ago.

Joyce, who had won three fights in-a-row for the Turkish side up to that point, lodged a protest following that verdict. A decision on the protest is expected before Christmas.

Joyce, meantime, will line out for Bosphorus against China's Zhimin Wang when when the Beijing Dragons visit Istanbul on Friday.

Ken Egan v Ramazan Magomedau (WSB)
Neither Ken Egan or Con Sheehan will be in action for the Leipzig Leopards for the visit  of Paris United.

Both boxers were between the ropes last Saturday in Baku but lost out to the Azerbaijani pair of Ramazan Magomedau and Abdullayev Abdulkadir of the Baku Fires on a night the home side recorded a 5-0 win to go top of Group B.

However, it wasn't all bad news for Irish boxers in the WSB last weekend as Belfast's Patrick Gallagher beat Russell Lamour of the Los Angeles Matadors to help his Mumbai Fighters side to a 5-0 win over LA in India.

Ireland's Jason Quigley and Sean Turner are signed with the Matadors.

The Californian side will meet Thailand's Bangkok Elephants in Hollywood on Sunday.
Both teams have joined forces with SOS Children's Villages and the match is in aid of the young victims of the floods that have devastated Thailand.

Since September, 63 of Thailand's 77 provinces have been fighting incessant flooding.

The human tragedy that has left several hundreds dead, thousands homeless and many children without parents.

Joe Fitzpatrick with IABA President Tommy Murphy

Irish 2012 Olympian Michael Conlan presented Joe Fitzpatrick with his gold medal at last night's Ulster Elite Championships finals at the Emerald Roadhouse in Belfast.

Fitzpatrick claimed a bronze medal for Ireland at the 2011 European Youths Championships aged just 16.

And last night, one week after he turned 17, the exciting Immaculata BC prospect  handed himself a belated birthday present with a 19-8 win over the experienced Ruairi Dalton on his Ulster Elite Championship debut.

“It was a good experience. I enjoyed it in there and now I will be preparing for the Youth Open in Dublin next month. I hope to qualify from that for next year’s World Youths, " Fitzpatrick told today's Irish News.

James Fryers, meantime, made it an Immaculata double with a hard fought win over James Tennyson, and JP Delaney edged out Conor Coyle to complete a hat-trick for the club.

Paul Upton, less than a week after he secured a National Intermediate title at the National Stadium, was back on top of the podium again last evening following a comprehensive win over Terry Garland.

Bout of the night? Well, there was only one contender - Jamie Kennedy versus Eamon Magee.

Best mates outside the ring, both men put their friendships aside to produce a cracking three rounds of boxing which Kennedy shaded by one point.

Kennedy boxes out of the Toome ABA, and his coach and dad, Damian Kennedy, told the Irish News that they were thrilled to have claimed their first Ulster senior title on the 10th anniversary of the club.

“I am so, so proud of Jamie. It was a fantastic final, just as we all knew it would be. Jamie and Eamon are best friends, fought at the Irish Intermediates, and they produced a great contest,” he said.

Sarah Close, with a 15-9 win over Nicole Hamill, emerged victorious from Thursday's welterweight final.

John Joe Nevin and Rashid Kaseem (WSB)

Irish 2008 and 2012 Olympian John Joe Nevin secured a victory to help Paris United to a 3-2 away win over Ken Egan's and Con Sheehan's Leipzig Leopards in the World Series of Boxing in Germany last night.

The Cavan BC bantamweight, who was boxing at lightweight, hammered out a unanimous decision (49-46,49-46,49-46) over Denmark's Rashid Kassem.

JJ v Kaseem (WSB)
Nevin, who helped United win the WSB Team Championships last season, was making his first appearance of the 2011/12 term for the Parisians.

Egan and Sheehan were not in action for the Leopards last evening.

However, the German side did pick up a point from the five-bout match in Group B. WSB teams losing 5-0 or 4-1 do not receive points, but teams losing 3-2 will earn a losing bonus point.

Elsewhere in Group B, David Oliver Joyce's Istanbul Bosphorus cruised to a 4-1 home win over the Beijing Dragons.

In Group A, Willie McLaughlin's Milano Thunder remain unbeaten after chalking up their fifth straight victory of the season over Dynamo Moscow last night to open up a five point lead at the top
of the table, but Patrick Gallagher's Mumbai Fighters were trounced 5-0 at home by the Astana Arlans.

Willie McLaughlin (WSB)
Neither Joyce, McLaughlin or Gallagher were in action for their respective sides last evening.

Meanwhile, Jason Quigley, the 2009 European Youth champion, and Sean Turner are going to Hollywood on Sunday night.

The Irish middleweight and super-heavyweight will line out for the Los Angles Matadors versus the Bangkok Elephants at the Music Box in Hollywood.

Donegal-born Quigley, who won his debut for LA in the WSB this season, will face Aussie puncher Troy Trevor O'Meley.

Dublin-born Turner is in against Anatolii Antoniuk of the Ukraine in his second outing for LA.

Jason Quigley and Sean Turner helped the Los Angeles Matadors finish out the year on a high note with a shut out 5-0 victory over the Bangkok Elephants in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) at the Music Box in Hollywood in the early hours of this morning.

Quigley, from the Finn Valley club in Donegal, recorded an inside the distance win over Aussie middleweight Trevor Troy O'Meley in the five-bout Group A match.

And Turner, who boxes out of the Drimnagh BC in Dublin, earned a unanimous decision over Ukrainian heavyweight Anatolii Antoniuk.

Quigley completely outclassed O'Meley to register his second WSB win of the season for LA.

Sean Turner with ex World champ Evander Holyfield and Henry Tillman
The 2009 European Youth champion stopped the Australian 1:05 into the second after running away with the opening frame (10-8,10-7,10-8).

The victory elevates the Donegal man to number three spot in the WSB middleweight rankings.

Turner was ahead on all three judges scorecards (48-47,48-47,50-45) Antoniuk at the bell.

The win lifts LA into third position in Group A, six points behind Willie McLaughlin's table-topping Milano Thunder.

The WSB Team Championships 2011/12 season is being decided across two-inter-continental, six-team groups.

The top four teams in each group qualify for the play-offs.

The LA Matadors and Bangkok Elephants clash saw the WSB team up with  SOS Children's Villages in aid and support of the young victims of the devastating floods suffered in Thailand.

2011 REVIEW

THREE European Senior gold medals and three places secured at the London 2012 Olympics were just some of the highlights of the Centenary year of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association.

The opening shots of what was to prove to be another eventful 12-months for Irish pugilism were discharged at the 2011 Elite National Senior Championships at Dublin's National Stadium in February.

Katie TaylorMichael Conlan, Paddy Barnes, Adam Nolan, Sinead Kavanagh, Katie Taylor, Joe Ward,  Darren O'Neill, Con Sheehan, Michael McDonagh,John Joe Nevin and Cathal McMonagle were amongst those leaving the home of Irish boxing with Elite belts adorning their waists.

Ward, who would go on to become one of the youngest European champions in the history of the sport aged just 17, the minimum age requirement for senior boxing, denied Ken Egan an 11th title in-a-row following an incident packed 81Kg duel at IABA HQ.

In April, Katie Rowland, Michaela Walsh and Austeja Accueita took home three bronze medals from
the 1st AIBA World Women's Youth and Junior Championships in Turkey.

John Joe Nevin
In May, 2008 and 2010 World Youth champions Ray Moylette and Ward secured  double gold at light-welter and light-heavy at the European Championships in Turkey following 18-10 and 20-12 decisions over England's Thomas Stalker and Russia's Nikita Ivanov.

Those victories, a year after Paddy Barnes finished on top of the European light-flyweight podium at the Ice Palace in Moscow, helped Ireland finish in second spot in the rankings table behind powerhouses Russia.

John Nevin, Luke Thomas and Martin Conroy took three bronze medals from the European Junior Championships in Hungary in June. Later that month one of the most inspirational stories of the year was unfolding at the European Schoolboy Championships in Grozny, Russia.

AIBA 2011 World Referee & Judge (R&J) Michael Gallagher
Twelve months previously, young John Joyce (Moate BC) was cruelly denied a place in the 41.5Kg final of the European Schoolboy Championships in Bulgaria following a highly controversial 1-0 "defeat" to Ivan Dubovik of Russia.

Joe Ward and Ray Moylette
Such was the outrage regarding that result, that Joyce, who boxes out of the same club as Joe Ward, was presented with the Boxer of the Tournament Award.

Accepting the accolade he vowed that he would return and win gold at the 2011 European Schoolboy Championships. He remained true to that vow as 12 months later he  finished in pole position in Grozny. James Cleary and Matthew Burke won silver the same day.

Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, President of the World amateur boxing organisation AIBA, attended 2011 the European Youth Championships, the flagship tournament of the IABA's Centenary year,
at the Citywest in Dublin in August.

Ireland claimed five medals in total at the Citywest, with Stephen Broadhurst, Jack Morrissey and Joe Fitzpatrick settling for triple bronze following semi-finals defeats. Michael O'Reilly and  Gary Sweeney reached the 69Kg and 81Kg finals.

But there was double disappointment on August 27 when O'Reilly was somehow adjudged to have dropped a 16-15 verdict to Russia's Igor Kharitonov and Sweeney narrowly lost to Kharitonov's compatriot, Vladimir Korsunov.

Ireland travelled to the AIBA World Senior Championships and first major Olympic qualification tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan with quite confidence following their European campaign.

But there were mixed fortunes on October 4 when David Oliver Joyce, Roy Sheehan, Joe Ward and Con Sheehan lost out just one win away from qualifying for the 30th Olympiad.

Joyce was cruelly denied by a harsh public warning for holding in the final three seconds of his bout with Jai Bhagwan, a warning which handed the Indian lightweight a 32-30 win and a plane ticket to London.

Ward, meantime, was edged out on a countback by Iranian brawler  Ehsan Rouzbahani. However, Michael Conlan, Darren O'Neill and John Joe Nevin didn't need to be asked twice with Olympic places up for grabs.

Darren O'Neill
All three won their last-16 clashes to reach the quarter-finals and secure automatic berths for the London Games. Conlan and O'Neill were beaten  in the last-eight.

Nevin, who won bronze at the 2009 AIBA World Championships in Milan, made the semi-finals to become the first Irish male boxer to win two medals at World Championships level.

But the stylish Mullingar bantamweight lost in his quest to become the first Irish male boxer to reach an AIBA World Championships final after a countback reversal to England's Luke Campbell.

Ireland sent a nine-strong squad to the 8th European Women's Championships in Rotterdam, Holland in October and Katie Taylor arrived back with her fifth gold medal in-a-row after recording a 10-5 win over Russia's two-time World champ Sofya Ochigava in the 60Kg final.

Ochigava had "beaten" Taylor 8-1 at the Usti Nad Labem Grand Prix in the Czech Republic in 2010, an outrageous result which suggested that some of the ringside judges were in urgent need of an appointment with the eastern European equivalent of Specsavers.

Michael Conlan
However, there was to be no victory for the Russian the second time around as Taylor got her tactics spot on to secure her 12th major title.

It was another remarkable victory for the Bray woman, who  won her fourth EU title on-the-trot in June courtesy of a 25-9 win over Poland’s Karolina Graczyk in Katowice, Poland.  Her points tally in four bouts in five days in Poland was 80 for and 30 against.

Also in October, Tommy Murphy was elected President of the IABA at Annual Congress at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel in Buncrana, Donegal. Murphy, a native of Co. Louth, polled 143 votes.  Wexford's Nicky White, the only challenger, polled 109 votes.

In November, the Ireland and Scotland schoolboy sides drew in Motherwell, while the Irish Elite squad secured five medals at the Olympic Test Event at the Excel Centre in London.

IABA President Tommy Murphy and head coach Billy Walsh
Ken Egan and Con Sheehan won gold, but Conrad Cummings had to settle for silver despite a fine performance against Russian middleweight Maxim Koptyakov in the 75Kg decider.

Gary Sweeney and Michael O'Reilly
David Oliver Joyce and Tommy McCarthy took home bronze from the dress rehearsal for the 2012 Olympics.  Tyrone's Michael Gallagher was also presented with the 2011 AIBA World Referee and Judge (R&J) award in London, another historic first for Irish boxing.

Accepting his reward, Gallagher said that it was a very proud moment, adding that he was keeping his fingers crossed that he'd make the R&J panel for the Olympic Games.

If he is selected for the 30th Olympiad - and he is the world number one - it could be a lucky omen for Ireland as Newry's Jackie Poucher was the last Irish R&J to officiate at Olympic level at the 1992 Games in Barcelona where Michael Carruth and Wayne McCullough won gold and silver.

Six Irish boxers also signed up for the inaugural World Series of Boxing (WSB) season in 2010/11. John Joe Nevin, who helped Paris United win out the WSB Team Championships, Ken Egan, Tommy McCarthy, Eamon O'Kane,David Oliver Joyce and John Joe Joyce competed.

Ken Egan
Nevin, Egan, Joyce, Con Sheehan, Willie McLaughlin, Sean Turner, Jason Quigley and Patrick Gallagher have signed up for the 2011/12 WSB season which is underway.

The above are just some of the international highlights of the Centenary year of Irish amateur boxing, another successful 12-months for the sport home and abroad.

Ireland's clubs and coaches, team managers and all coaching and backup staff played their part in what was another successful twelve months internationally and domestically,

The next six months will be a crucial, starting with the Elite Senior Championships at the National Stadium in January and February.

David Oliver Joyce lands a right hook on Con Sheehan
The focus will then begin to switch to the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers in April in Istanbul and the only Olympic qualifier for female boxers at the 2012 AIBA World Women's Championships in China in May.

Ireland will be targeting ten places at both qualifiers, seven for men and three for women. It's all still to play for.

On the last occasion that the Olympic Games were held in London, Dubliner Mick McKeon (Crumlin BC) would have won bronze if the present rules governing the awarding of medals were in place.

McKeon, boxing at middleweight, won three bouts to reach to semi-finals at the 1948 Games in the English capital but lost out in the last-four to Britain's Johnny Wight, who claimed silver.

McKeon was then forced to concede a walkover to Ivano Fontanta of Italy in the box-off for bronze because of injury.

John McNally
Four years later at the 1952 Games in Helsinki - where the great John McNally won silver - it was decided to abolish box-offs and award all losing semi-finalists bronze medals.

The decision was taken because of concerns after three boxers, one of which included McKeon, withdrew from bronze medal box-offs at the 1948 Games because of injury.

Ireland's Patrick Dwyer (1924), Frank Traynor (1928) and James J. Murphy (1932) also reached the semi-finals at the Olympic Games and would have secured bronze if the present rules governing the awarding of medals were in place.

Dwyer and Murphy conceded walkovers in their bronze medal box-offs because of injury, while Traynor was beaten by Harry Isaacs (South Africa) in the box-off for bronze in Amsterdam 84 years ago.

Meanwhile, Michael Conlan, John Joe Nevin and Darren O'Neill have already qualified for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Ireland will be aiming to add to that total at the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers in Istanbul in April and at the 2012 AIBA World Women's Championships in China in May.

Women's boxing will make its debut at the 30th Olympiad in London this year over 100 years after male boxing was introduced at the 1904 Olympics in St Louis.
