Jamie Lonergan (red) v Ryan Clarke

The 2012 National Boy 4 and Youth 1 & 2  Championships are now at the finals stages after 28 Boy 4 and Youth 2 semi-finals were decided at the National Stadium tonight.

In the only Boy 4 semi-final of the evening, St Michael's Athy bantamweight John Joyce, the current European Schoolboy 48Kg champion, scored a 9-4 win over Gerard French.

Martin Reilly found the target with a flashing right in the second and forced Michael Lawrence into a standing count in the third en route to victory over Michael Lawrence in the opening Youth 2 semi-final.

The Enniskillen ace will now meet Dubliner Adam Courtney in Saturday's 48Kg final following Courtney's win over Cork's Mike Olden, a victory which denied the Watergrasshill BC a third boxer in Saturday's finals.

The 50Kg deciders went the way of the equally impressive Keith Flavin and Aidan Metcalfe, Flavin recording and inside the distance win over Conor McCrink and Metcalfe seeing off the brave challenge of Limerick's Conor Madden.

Keith Flavin
Irish international Kurt Walker and Hughie Joyce produced a fine opening two rounds at flyweight, Walker firing in some big body shots, Joyce countering to the head.

Walker emerged from this clash and will face Clonmel BC stand out Jamie Lonergan, who had five points to spare over Ryan Clarke tonight, in the corresponding 52Kg decider.

"It was a good fight, tight. I'm looking forward to the final which should be another good one, " said Walker, who will be aiming for his fifth Irish title against an opponent who will be appearing in his first national final tomorrow.

The bantamweight duels went the way of John J Nevin and Dylan Tang, Nevin beating Conor Doyle 9-1, and Tang, who will be targeting his second Irish crown tomorrow, forcing Cork's Robert McCarthy into a standing count in the first on his way to victory.

Former European Schoolboy Championships bronze medalist Victor Medveduic and Sean Higginson progressed from the 57Kg deciders at the expense of Brendan Sheppard and Domhnail Deeney.

Clare's Lee Sherlock added to his growing reputation with a tight 9-8 verdict over John Joyce, while Hugh Nevin powered his way to victory over Stephen Webb.

Limerick's Lee Reeves kept the flag flying for the St Francis BC. The stylish Shannonsider led all the way to victory over Jordan O'Neill, while John Stokes made it two wins on-the-bounce for the Mulhuddart BC at the expense of John G Donovan.

There was further disappointment for the Olympic club in Galway shortly after Donovan's loss after Thomas McDonagh was beaten by Dan McInerney. The Sunnyside BC in Cork suffered mixed fortunes following conflicting results for Darragh Roche and Paddy McDonagh.

Roche lost out to Gerard Whitehouse in a lively 66Kg three-rounder, but McDonagh held off a strong challenge from Gerard McCorley. McDonagh will now meet another McDonagh, Jason, who beat a third McDonagh, Richie, in the other 70Kg semi-final, in the final.

Owen Birmingham, meantime, took the early route to victory over Nathan Duncan to set up a middleweight final with Martin Conroy. Patrick Gaffey and Micky Harty will contest the 80Kg final tomorrow.

Gaffey was involved in a tough decider with Thomas Carthy and Harty recorded a well deserved win over Michael Ward. Cathal Gallagher took two standing counts versus John McDonell at 86Kg.

Thomas Conroy awaits McDonnell in the cruiserweight final after Conroy  received a walkover over Davey Joyce who was injured.

Brian Gannon and Owen Maughan registered inside the distance decision in the final two bouts of the evening.

The weight-in for Saturday's Boy 4 and Youth 1 & 2 finals will take place between 8.30am and 9.30am at the National Stadium.

Boxing begins (Boy 4) at 10.30am Saturday. The Youth 1 finals glove off at 2.30pm followed by the Youth 2 finals at 6.30pm.

Willie McLaughlin (left) en route to his 4th win in the WSB v Joe Mulema

John Joe Nevin's Paris United crashed out of the World Series of Boxing Team Championships at the quarter-finals stage after losing 5-0 to Willie McLaughlin's Milano Thunder in Milan last night.

The Parisians, the defending champions, went into last night's match holding a 3-2 advantage from Monday's first-leg win over Thunder in Paris.

London 2012 Olympian Nevin (Cavan BC) contributed to that margin of victory with a split decision over Serbia's Branimir Stankovic.

McLaughlin (ILLies GG Donegal) helped pull one back for Thunder with a 4th round TKO of Joe Mulema of the Cameroon.

John Joe Nevin (right) in action in the WSB
Monday's win left United needing three victories to progress to the semi-finals from the return leg.

But Thunder bid arrivederci to the French side with last night's rout which saw them advance to the last-four 7-3 on aggregate.

Neither Nevin or McLaughlin were in action last evening.

It is expected the fans favourite McLaughlin, who has won four-in-a-row for Thunder in the WSB this season, will feature in the semi-finals.

Thunder will meet either Patrick Gallagher's Mumbai Fighters or the Baku Fires in the last-four.

The Fires meet the Fighters in Azerbaijan tonight looking to overturn a 3-2 first-leg deficit.

The Leipzig Leopards, who signed Ireland's Ken Egan and Con Sheehan at the start of the season, are out of the tournament after being thrashed 10-0 on aggregate by Dynamo Moscow.

Aidan Metcalfe (red) v Conor Madden

Kieran Lally ensured that the Ardnaree BC were celebrating this morning with a fine win over the brave David McDonagh in the opening Boy (4) 33kg final. A thrilling contest saw Lally earn a 13-4 decision.

Young Michael Sweeney also had his hand raised in victory - much to the delight of his vociferous band of supporters - after earning an 11-7 verdict over Avona BC ace Thomas Maughan.

Monaghan's Stephen McKenna overturned a 4-3 first round deficit to defeat Galway's Francis Cleary in a top class 39Kg decider.  Both boxers picked off some excellent shots in this encounter, McKenna laying the platform for an 11-9 win with a particularly fine second round performance.

Jamie Conroy and Luke O'Shea produced an edge-of-the-seat third round, Conroy claiming the final frame to shade a 6-5 decision. Exciting young Derry prospect Ryan Green also emerged victorious this morning, a 17-7 verdict over Bernard Ward securing the 44Kg crown for the Oakleaf BC.

Meanwhile, the Mulhuddart club in Dublin were celebrating a remarkable double following back-to-back wins for Martin Stokes and Karl Lynch in 46Kg and 48kg finals, Stokes beating Michael Nevin and Lynch coming out on top versus Conor Bianconi.

Sean Conroy (red) and Paddy Joyce
Cork's Patrick Doherty landed his second Irish title with a 7-5 win over Kalum McConville in a repeat of the 2011 Boy 3 final which Doherty also won.

"We're very happy with his performance. This is his second Irish title and he was in against a good opponent this morning," said Peter Higgins, who was working Doherty's corner along with John O'Callaghan.

James Cleary, meanwhile, claimed the 52Kg title with a 12-2 victory over Conor Martin.  James' grandmother sadly passed away this morning and the talented young Olympic BC stand out poignantly dedicated his win in her memory. May she rest in peace.

Tiernan Bradley and John Joyce were locked at 4-4 going into the final round of their clash before Bradley edged the final frame to emerge with a 6-5 decision. Stephen Myres suffered an unfortunate injury to his right ankle in the third round of his clash with newly crowned featherweight champion Michael McGrane and retired injured.

Craig Bonney, Daniel Keating and Lewis Crocker also finished on top of the podium, Crocket beating Limerick prospect Terry Harris and Keating collecting the 63Kg title at the expense of Martin Maughan. Bonney denied the Olympic BC a second with a 9-5 decision over Michael Delaney.

The light-middleweight and middleweight honours went to Sean Conroy and Jonathan F, Ward at the expense of Paddy Joyce and Matthew Burke, while power-punching Limerick light-heavy Cormac Long stopped the gallant Gearoid McAllister in round one.

Mikey Walsh and Gary F. Ward also have plenty of dynamite in their gloves, but ultimately it was Ward's greater accuracy that earned him an 11-5 decision in the 86Kg final.

St Anne's heavyweight Patryik Famulski denied Jason McCabe in the 91Kg final. Darragh Darcy lost his right glove in the second round of his showdown with Chris McCloskey.

But the Tobar Pheadair  super-heavyweight didn't lose the bout. A 40-38 countback win from Darcy was the final verdict here following a 12-12 tie.

Jason McKay claimed the Youth (1) 48Kg title with an impressive 16-7 win over Garry Kehoe this morning.

Dom Sarsfield (blue) and Daryl Moran

Newry's Jordan Chambers threw everything into an all-out bid to claw back a 7-5 deficit in the final round of his Youth (1) 36Kg final with Patrick Stokes this afternoon.

But Stokes, who was as equally determined to maintain his advantage, extended his margin in the final frame to secure an 11-8 win.

Talented young prospect Brendan Irvine also triumphed today, the Antrim teenager securing the 39Kg honours with a 14-4 decision over Robert Dolan.

It couldn't have been any closer! Donegal's three-time Irish champion Daryl Moran and Limerick's Dom Sarsfield shared all three rounds, the final score and the first countback before Sarsfield, who winged home a big left hook in the third, secured an edge-of-the-seat verdict on a double countback.

Meanwhile, up and coming Toome ABC ace Padraig Mackle, who lost out in the 2011 national finals, came from behind to beat John Gerard. Gerard, who took a standing count in the third, held a 5-4 lead going into the final two minutes of this clash, but Mackle pulled out all the stops to take the 44Kg honours back to Antrim.

Colm Molloy, family and friends celebrate after today's win
Today's win was Mackle's first top of the podium finish in a national final.  Joseph McDonagh, Colm Molloy, following a battle royale with Piaras Casey, Neil McClurkin, with one-point win over Gary Cully, and Bernard McDonagh took home the 46Kg,50Kg,52Kg, 54Kg titles.

Michael McDonagh and Darren Pollock went all the way down to a countback, McDonagh winning out on accepted scores.  Caomhin Hynes secured the Holy Trinity BC's second title with an 11-6 victory over Wayne Kelly in a full-blooded lightweight clash.

Conor Wallace shaded a 9-8 verdict over Daryl Byrne in yet another close decider, while Barry Harkin produced one of the upsets of the Championships to defeat European Junior bronze medalist Luke Thomas.

Harkin was 8-3 ahead at the end of the first round and also held a five point advantage (11-6) at the conclusion of the second against the Cork champion. Thomas threw everything into attack in the third, but Harkin's high guard, complimented by some neat counter punching, was enough to seal a very impressive 17-8 win.

Tommy Maughan, Brian Wall, Michael Gallagher, James Hughes and James Norantonion, with a win that denied the St Franci BC a second title, claimed the final five victories of the afternoon.

David Oliver Joyce, Ross Hickey, Adam Nolan, Steven Ward and Con Sheehan will wear the Irish lightweight, light-welterweight, welterweight, heavyweight and super-heavyweight vests by the banks of the river Saale.

John Joe Nevin, who has also qualified for the 30th Olympiad, has withdrawn from the tournament after picking up a facial injury boxing for Paris United versus Milano Thunder in the World Series of Boxing on Monday week last.

Hosts Germany, Algeria, Austria, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Netherlands, Romania, Russia and Uzbekistan have registered to compete in Halle.

Seven AIBA World champions will line out for their respective nations at the tournament.

China's Zou Shiming and Paddy Barnes could renew acquaintances at the Chemistry Cup. Both boxers met in the semi-finals of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Shiming winning en route to claiming light-flyweight gold.

Russia's 2009 AIBA World champion Egor Mekhontsev, meantime, could be drawn against Joe Ward in a battle of the southpaws. Mekhontsev is currently ranked number 4 in the world by AIBA. Ward is ranked number 3.

Boxing begins at 11am (Irish time) at the Maritim Hotel in Halle on Wednesday. Wednesday's preliminaries will be decided over three sessions beginning at 11am, 3pm and 7pm (Irish time).

Ireland are preparing for the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers which begin in Trabzon, Turkey on April 13th and Irish head coach Billy Walsh believes that the Chemistry Cup will play its part in those preparations.

Michael Conlan, Ross Hickey and Darren O'Neill

"We had an excellent training camp in Hennef and the Chemistry Cup will give us a great opportunity to get some competitive bouts under our belt against world class opposition, he said.

"The Olympic qualifiers are just a few weeks away now and the Hennef training camp and the Chemistry Cup are all part of our preparations for those qualifiers."

On the last occasion that Ireland entered the Chemistry Cup, in May 2007, Darren Sutherland (RIP) claimed bronze.

Ken Egan took home silver from the 2006 edition of the prestigious Multi-Nations tournament.

David Oliver Joyce (blue) in action

Joe Ward is guaranteed at least a silver medal at the 39th Chemistry Cup following a
convincing win over Carlos Gongora of Ecuador in Halle, Germany tonight.

The Moate BC southpaw earned a 15-8 win over three, three  minutes rounds at the Maritim Hotel.

Ward will now meet Russian light-heavyweight Egor Mekonstev in Saturday's 81Kg final.

Earlier today, Michael Conlan and David Oliver Joyce had to settle for bronze at the 20-nation tournament.

London 2012 Olympian Conlan was edged out on a 50-46 countback by Mongolia's Serdamba Purevdorj following a tight flyweight contest which ended tied at 15-15.

The first round finished locked at 3-3 and Purevdorj edged 8-7 in front by the end of the second. Conlan, boxing well on the counter, won the third but it was the Mongolian that got the nod on accepted scores.

Joyce was trailing 12-7 going into the third round of his lightweight contest with Robson Conceicao of Brazil. The St Michael's Athy man forced Conceicao into a standing count in the final frame but lost 17-10.

Meanwhile, Paddy Barnes lost out to German light-flyweight Hamza Touba this evening.

Barnes' higher work-rate, particularly in the second round, failed to make a sufficient impression with the judges and he found himself 11-7 down going into the third before Touba, who was 4-2 up after the first, emerged with a 15-12 decision.

Adam Nolan also bowed out to a German opponent, the Bray BC welterweight losing 21-14 to
Arayk Marutjan.

Joe Ward (back row, second from right) with nine of the gold medal winners from the 39th Chemistry Cup

Joe Ward may have denied Russia one gold at the 39th Chemistry Cup in Halle, Germany on St Patrick's Day.

However, that didn't stop the European powerhouses claiming four gold medals at the 20-nation tournament.

Members of the Irish Chemistry Cup squad being greeted at Dublin airport on Sunday

Ward finished on top of the light-heavyweight podium - and also  scooped the Best Technical boxer award - after a 20-14  win over Russia's 2009 AIBA World Senior champion Egor Mekhonstev, a bronze medal winner at the 2011 AIBA World Championships and a two-time European champion.

Irish coach Eddie Bolger and Adam NolanLondon 2012 Olympian Michael Conlan, David Oliver Joyce, Adam Nolan and Paddy Barnes claimed four bronze medals in Halle.

Barnes was beaten by Germany's Hamza Touba, who was edged out by one point by  Russia's Belik Galanov in the light-flyweight final.

Conlan was unlucky to lost out on a countback to Serdamba Purevdorj of Mongolia in the flyweight semi-final. Purevdorj subsequently lost to Jasurbek Latipov of Uzbekistan in the 52kg decider.

Nolan was beaten by  Germany's Arayk Marutjan in the last-four and the German welterweight dropped a 19-15 decision Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan in the 69Kg final.

Brazilian lightweight Robson Conceicao, who took a standing count on his way to his last-four win over David Oliver Joyce, collected gold following a convincing victory over Gani Zhaylaov of Kazakhstan in the 60Kg final.

IABA President Tommy Murphy, Irish coaches Zuar Antia and Eddie Bolger and Con Sheehan at Dublin airport

Ireland don't regularly enter the Chemistry Cup because the tournament usually coincides with the Irish Elite Championships.

Likewise, Joe Ward is the first Irish boxer to win gold at the prestigious German Multi-Nations.

Ken Egan (2006) and Michael Roche (2000) both took home silver from the tournament.

Ajhmal Hosenbows (transition year student The Donaghies), Oisin Fagan and Tommy Jinad (transition year student St Vincents) and the National Stadium Gym

Oisin "Gael Force" Fagan, who works as a community development officer for boxing with the IABA and the Dublin City Council, has set himself yet another mammoth challenge.

The 38 year-old, who was the oldest man ever, to win a first professional Irish title, at the ripe old-age of 32, when lesser men have finished up their careers, intends to add another major accomplishment to his CV.

This time though, he will work for a very worthy cause, by volunteering for the 'Show Racism the Red Card' (SRRC) group; while, attempting to use his skills with a skipping rope, to jump an incredible 10,000 times, all within the space of an hour.

'Show Racism the Red Card' are an organisation, founded to bring awareness to racism; while encouraging inter-cultural activities and integration; which, is a cause, close to Fagan's heart.

The former schoolteacher lived in the USA for 10-years and in that time, through his skills as a centre-midfielder, on a soccer scholarship, he graduated, with honours and degrees in physical education and political journalism.

Since his return to Dublin, he acquired a job as a community officer in boxing development, with the Dublin City Council (DCC) and IABA, where integration, it seems, is to be at the forefront of this highly-specialised position.

Fagan said, "Racism, is a issue that greatly upsets me and it's a scourge that I want to help totally eradicate. I had a 10-year stint in the USA, where I ended up teaching English and PE to minority; predominantly, Latino children at an inner-city public school, in OKC, called Columbus Elementary; while, moonlighting as a professional boxer; therefore, I've had countless experiences, both, competing against, and working with minorities; after all, I was one myself, in the USA, which is simply, the biggest melting-pot of colour and cultures in the world.

"During my time abroad, I met many wonderful people from all backgrounds and even though I am an extremely proud Irishman and wear my heart on my sleeve in that regard, I am delighted and blessed that I have so many of my best friends as foreign-nationals and from the Travelling Community too. My black friends in the USA, Jamaica and Africa are behind me 100% with this challenge. So too, are my former students and their parents at Columbus Elementary, who were from Mexican backgrounds, mainly.

He continued, "Employment as a community officer, using boxing as the tool, is the greatest job in the world and I commend the Dublin City Council and IABA for their appointments with these positions. I would like to especially thank Karl Mitchell, Cóilín O'Reilly, Derek Ahern and Aideen O'Connor, of the DCC, for their continued support. One of the great things about this job, on a personal note, is that it gives me the chance to work with and help integrate youngsters of all ethnicities; while keeping them out of trouble and keeping them focused on all the positives that boxing presents 'at-risk' children and teens.

"I think real boxing people are some of the greatest people in the world- a very tough and honest bunch; however, when these jobs were first advertised, some of the more narrow-minded, thought that all a candidate needed to be successful in this job, was to be a tough trainer and competent on the focus-pads; however, while it's ironic in this very tough sport, you actually need to have a lot of empathy and good-will towards the participants in regards to Dublin's current demographics.

"To be fair, many of the underdogs in contemporary Irish society, are these new immigrants into our country; which, is not dissimilar to our own plight in the famine years; the recession in the eighties, and even nowadays, after the bubble burst on the Celtic Tiger, where our own people are once again, seriously thinking about emigration. Unfortunately, in regards to the few narrow-minded folk out there, most of them haven't had much experience with foreign-nationals up until now; furthermore, their attitude towards the Travelling Community, certainly leaves a lot to be desired. In my opinion, it's a terribly ignorant approach, to dislike or treat people with contempt because of their skin-colour, ethnicity, or culture and therefore, it's imperative to show empathy and have well-educated, experienced, kind and respectful workers in these positions, while dealing with issues of integration. "

Fittingly enough, the 'European Week Against Racism' commences next week and it's fair to say that Oisin Fagan's, one-hour, non-stop skipping-challenge, shows his sincerity to be a positive, progressive boxing role-model for all children and young people, regardless of colour or ethnicity; which, ultimately challenges the negative philosophies and outdated attitudes that sometimes plague the sport of boxing and society, in general.

Fagan finishes off poignantly, by telling us, "Everyone, no matter where they are from, are entitled to be treated equally and with respect. How dare it be any other way. Who are these uneducated fools who think they are superior to any another person, simply because of the colour of his/her skin? This is the 21st Century folks and with the help of the DCC, I am confident that we will make integration the norm in boxing circles within a few years and hopefully this is used as a paradigm for other sports to follow suit. Fagan continued, "In political-theory, there's a strategy of initiatives, which use sport to reduce tensions, while shaping nation-to-nation relationships, called 'ping-pong diplomacy'.  However, I believe that boxing, is the best means of 'ping-pong diplomacy' and it's a sport that can act as a fantastic catalyst to bring people together. As one of my co-worker's, Paul, rightly said yesterday, 'Forget racism between blacks and whites- there are no colours at odds in boxing, except for 'The Red VS The Blue', which of course, for those who are unfamiliar with the rules and regulations of the sport, refers to the the opposing coloured corners, in competitive amateur boxing."

Fagan's, "Gael-Force 10,000 Revolutions Per Hour Challenge", commences at 4pm-6pm on Thursday, 22nd of March and will take place on Grafton Street, Dublin (at the St Stephen's Green end of the street). Head along to cheer on Oisin and to help this great cause, promoted by 'Show Racism the Red Card'.
