John Caldwell and Freddie Gilroy

Belfast Lord Mayor Niall Ó Donnghaile will honour the city’s past, present and future Olympic Games boxing stars at the Belfast City Hall on February 24.

The city’s first citizen, a sports enthusiast, will welcome some of the greatest sporting athletes to emerge from the city to represent Ireland and GB in the greatest sporting event on earth.

Paddy Barnes

A veritable who’s who of amateur boxing will attend the reception in honour and recognition of their achievements in the ring, and at the Olympic Games.

Stretching back to 1928, Belfast has punched above its weight by claiming a total of two silver and five bronze medals.

This event, which has been organised by the Belfast Boxing Ring, aims to showcase the achievements of the local amateur fraternity and inspire the local boxers attending the Olympic Games in London this year.

Michael Conlan (red) in action

Secretary of the Belfast Boxing Ring, Barry Flynn, said that the gathering will be an historic one and will provide an opportunity for many old friendships to be rekindled.

He added: “The city has a pedigree in amateur boxing that is truly remarkable. When you consider the wealth of talent Belfast has produced at Olympic level, it can only but inspire young boxers today to emulate such achievements.

HICKEY AIMING FOR GOLD IN TRABZON

Ross Hickey (centre) with Irish 2012 Olympians Michael Conlan and Darren O'Neill

Three-time Irish Elite champion Ross Hickey has acknowledged the task ahead of him at the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers in Trabzon, Turkey in April.

Barring injury, Hickey, a bronze medal winner at the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool, will wear the Irish light-welterweight vest by the banks of the Black Sea.

However, there is just one Olympic quota place left in the light-welterweight class, meaning that the stylish Grangecon BC ace will have absolutely no room for error and will have to claim gold.

However, the Irish champion reckons he will be up to the task.

"I have to win it, there is no second place. Winning is the only thing that I am thinking about now. I have to give it everything and I believe that I can do it," he told the Kildare nationalist.

Hickey, an Irish army private,  was on familiar stomping ground  when he took part in the recent Elite training camp at the Irish army base at the Curragh in Kildare.

The intensive boot camp finished up last Friday and 25-year-old Hickey praised sports psychologist Gerry Hussey and the Irish army.

"He (Gerry Hussey)  gets our heads right for tournaments. He gets stuff going. He helps a lot, it gets me focused on what I want to do in the ring.

"There sessions a day, it's tough. After the morning run it would be either shadow boxing or sometimes we went down to the tank tracks doing army drills.

"Normally though, it would be shadow boxing outside then back in for breakfast. It would be training again at 10.30am, maybe some weights or sprinting and then another session in the afternoon.

Ross Hickey (red) and Philip Sutcliffe
"Some of the boys were asking about a few things that were going on and what was happening so I able to fill them in."

"They (the Irish army) gave me time to concentrate on my boxing and I'm very grateful for the support that they gave me."

The Irish champion also believes that retaining his Irish title in Olympic year was special.

"You can't beat the first one, that is the one that gets you going and it's what you trained for. This was special though because I defended it.

"I feel like a real champion after retaining the title. It's an Olympic year as well so it's the hardest title to win and as champion you are one that everybody is training to beat."

*AIBA confirmed recently that there had been an exchange of Olympic quota places between the European and Asian qualifiers. Likewise, there are now just four berths available in the light-flyweight class in the European qualifiers, down one place from five, and two places available in the middleweight class, up one place from one.

However, the middleweight category will be of academic interest to Ireland in Trabzon as Darren O'Neill has already qualified for the XXX Olympiad in this category.*

TAYLOR SET FOR ROYAL RUMBLE

Katie Taylor

Katie Taylor will be seeking to extend her dominance over Switzerland's Sandra Brugger and Norway's Ingrid Egner at the Royal Hotel in her hometown of Bray over the next 24 hours.

She meets Brugger, an opponent she has beaten three times already, this evening, and faces Egner, who she has beaten twice, tomorrow night in the main events on two extensive fight cards featuring some top class young boxers.

Brugger, who was stopped by Taylor in the second round of the 2007 European 60Kg final, is no stranger to Ireland as she was beaten by the Taylor in Bray four years ago.

Egner, a molecular biologist, was beaten by Taylor in the Irishwoman's first full international in Oslo in 2004 and on a split decision in London in 2010.

Pete Taylor and Zuar Antia will be working Taylor's corner over the next 24 hours, and Taylor senior reckons it will be tough.

Taylor
"Katie is in against two world class boxers in Sandra and Ingrid and she'll have her work cut out. Nothing comes easy at this level anymore, especially against such experienced opponents," he said.

Taylor had been due to meet Jennifer Miranda on Sunday night at the Royal Hotel but the Spanish
lightweight withdrew from the clash.

The weekend's double header is part of Taylor's preparations for the AIBA World Women's Championships and only Olympic qualifier for female boxers in Qinhuangdao, China in May.

Egner is officially ranked 10th in the world by AIBA going into Saturday's four-rounder. Taylor has been ranked number one since November, 2006.

TAYLOR WINS IN BRAY

Katie Taylor Katie Taylor ensured that her army of supporters had reason to celebrate after she recorded an impressive victory over Sandra Brugger at the Royal Hotel in her hometown of Bray tonight.

The current World and European champion earned a unanimous decision over the Swiss lightweight in a repeat of the 2007 European final which Taylor also won.

The Bray woman will be back in action again at the Royal Hotel tomorrow night versus Norway's Ingrid Egner, an opponent she has beaten twice in the past.

Tonight's contest was Taylor's first outing since she won her fifth European 60Kg title in-a-row in Holland last October.

Sandra Brugger
"It was a cracking contest and Katie was outstanding, particularly in the first two rounds, said Pat Ryan, who has worked extensively with Taylor's coach and dad Pete Taylor over the last five years.

"Katie is certainly moving forward and improving all the time.  The Swiss girl was tough. She came to fight and she did that and she deserves respect for that.

"The Norwegian girl will be a different type of opponent tomorrow night and it should be a top class contest."

Meanwhile, Taylor has been included in the Irish squad to face Holland in Dublin and Cavan next month.

The double meeting marks an historic occasion as it is the first time that the Irish Amateur Boxing Association have hosted a full women's international.

Powerhouses Cuba served notice that they will be one of the ones to beat at the London Olympics with a five-star display at the Strandja Memorial finals in Sofia, Bulgaria on Sunday.

The Cubans claimed five gold medals at the tournament which featured 12 World champions.

One of those medals was secured by way of a walkover by super-heavyweight Erislandy Savon, a nephew of the legendary Felix Savon, a six-time World and three-time Olympic champion.

Bulgarian flyweight Stefan Ivanov, meanwhile, stopped Andrew Selby of Wales in the third round of their 52Kg duel.

Selby won a silver medal at the 2011 AIBA World Championships and is the current European champion.

Turkey's Gulsum Tatar beat China's Liu Chang in the women's lightweight final.

Tatar, who has been beaten twice by  Katie Taylor, is the current AIBA World and European light-welterweight champion.

However, she has now dropped down from 64Kg to the 60Kg Olympic limit.

Chang beat her compatriot Cheng Dong - who Taylor beat in the last two AIBA World finals - to win gold at the Chinese National Championships.

A 13-strong Irish Elite squad fly out to Germany tomorrow (February 28th) to begin a training camp in Hennef.

London 2012 Olympians Michael Conlan, John Joe Nevin and Darren O'Neill have been included in the Irish panel.

Current Elite champions Paddy Barnes, Michael McDonagh, Ross Hickey, Adam Nolan, Joe Ward, Tommy McCarthy and Con Sheehan are also included.

Barring injury the above seven will represent Ireland at the final Olympic qualifier for European male boxers in Trabzon, Turkey in April.

The squad, which finished up a training camp at the Irish army base in the Curragh, Co. Kildare recently, have one final training camp in the Ukraine later next month before heading directly to Trabzon for the qualifiers for the XXX Olympiad.

Ireland head coach Billy Walsh believes that the Germany training camp and the Chemistry Cup tournament will give the Irish squad the opportunity to build on the work they began at the Curragh.

"It's a good place to get focused. It's all part  of our preparations for the qualifiers. We're looking to get our preparations right for Trabzon," he said.

"The team will also compete in the Chemistry Cup which should be very competitive this year. We had a very productive training camp at the Curragh and we will be looking to build on that in Germany in the build up to the Olympic qualifiers."
